Teachings of St. Chavara “Testament of a Loving Father
This weekend we reflect on the 2nd Testament of St. Chavara. In this He invites us to avoid all civil litigation as much as possible. St. Chavara. says “Civil litigation ruins families. Even in the most just case many a litigant has come to regret the fact that it would have been better not to have gone to court. No one has been happy or better off by having gone in for litigation”
In our culture, we go to court for anything and everything. Even family members, siblings and couples go to court to settle deputes. It is waste of money and time. This also destroys good relationships between individuals and families. It would be better if we could sit together and talk and reach an agreement. St. Chavara reminds us that at the end of every civil litigation, both parties will think, it was better to settle the dispute outside court.
Taking inspiration from St. Chavara, let us try to avoid civil litigation as much as possible so that we will have a smooth relationship between families, siblings and neighbors. St. Chavara says: “The hallmark of a good family is that the members live together by the bond of blood and affection” -St. Chavara
