“Focus on Family Unity”
Our own Bishop Robert J. Brennan was part of a delegation visiting the Diocese of Brownsville, Texas last week. This was part of a full day of visits with a “focus on family unity”. This delegation was concerned over the recent treatment of immigrant families. We hope to hear more from the findings of this delegation in the next few weeks.
The following statement was made by Cardinal DiNardo at the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops: “I join Bishop Joe Vásquez, Chairman of USCCB’s Committee on Migration, in condemning the continued use of family separation at the U.S./Mexico border as an implementation of the Administration’s zero tolerance policy. Our government has the discretion in our laws to ensure that young children are not separated from their parents and exposed to irreparable harm and trauma. Families are the foundational element of our society and they must be able to stay together. While protecting our borders is important, we can and must do better as a government, and as a society, to find other ways to ensure that safety. Separating babies from their mothers is not the answer and is immoral.”
Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Rockville Centre continues to work on the front lines of helping immigrant children. Anyone wishing to make a monetary donation in support of immigrant children can do so by visiting the Catholic Charities website. On the homepage, under the heading “Support our work with Immigrant Children” click on the link that reads “Designate a gift here.” On the Network for Good page, donors must designate that they would like their donation to be used for immigrant children. Checks can also be mailed to Catholic Charities Development Department, 90 Cherry Lane, Hicksville, NY, 11801. Be sure to enclose a note designating that the donation is for immigrant children and note on the check as well.
